The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was in the form of good dreams which came true like bright daylight, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him. He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he used to worship (Allah alone) continuously for many days before his desire to see his family. He used to take with him the journey food for the stay and then come back to (his wife) Khadija to take his food likewise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "I do not know how to read." The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, 'I do not know how to read.' Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, 'I do not know how to read (or what shall I read)?' Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, 'Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists), created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous." (96.1, 96.2, 96.3) Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) returned with the Inspiration and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, "Cover me! Cover me!" They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told her everything that had happened and said, "I fear that something may happen to me." Khadija replied, "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones." Khadija then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza, who, during the pre-Islamic Period became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadija said to Waraqa, "Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!" Waraqa asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, "This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked, "Will they drive me out?" Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, "Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly." But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while. - Hadith Al Bukhari 3 (islam)

ascended to the third heaven. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel said, 'Gabriel.' It was asked, 'Who i
with you? Gabriel said, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has he been sent for?' 'Yes,' said Gabriel. 'He i

and he replied, 'You are welcomed, O brother and a Prophet!' Then we ascended to the 4th heaven an

and greeted him. He said, 'You are welcomed O brother and Prophet.' Then we ascended to the 5t
heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in previous heavens. there I me

Then we ascended to the 6th heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as i
the previous heavens. There I met and greeted Moses who said, 'You are welcomed O brother and.
Prophet.' When I proceeded on, he started weeping and on being asked why he was weeping, he said
'O Lord! Followers of this youth who was sent after me will enter Paradise in greater number than m
followers.' Then we ascended to the seventh heaven and again the same questions and answers wer
exchanged as in the previous heavens. There I met and greeted Abraham who said, 'You ar
welcomed o son and a Prophet.' Then I was shown Al-Bait-al-Ma'mur (i.e. Allah's House). I aske
Gabriel about it and he said, This is Al Bait-ul-Ma'mur where 70,000 angels perform prayers daily an
when they leave they never return to it (but always a fresh batch comes into it daily).
Then I was shown Sidrat-ul-Muntaha (i.e. a tree in the seventh heaven) and I saw its Nabk fruit
which resembled the clay jugs of Hajr (i.e. a town in Arabia), and its leaves were like the ears o
elephants, and four rivers originated at its root, two of them were apparent and two were hidden.

ones are the Nile and the Euphrates.
Then fifty prayers were enjoined on me. I descended till I met Moses who asked me, 'What have yo
done?' I said, 'Fifty prayers have been enjoined on me.' He said, 'I know the people better than you
because I had the hardest experience to bring Bani Israel to obedience. Your followers cannot put u
with such obligation. So, return to your Lord and request Him (to reduce the number of prayers.'

a similar discussion, and then returned again to Allah for reduction and He made it thirty, then twenty
then ten, and then I came to Moses who repeated the same advice. Ultimately Allah reduced it to five
When I came to Moses again, he said, 'What have you done?' I said, 'Allah has made it five only.' H
repeated the same advice but I said that I surrendered (to Allah's Final Order)'" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) wa
addressed by Allah, "I have decreed My Obligation and have reduced the burden on My slaves, and
shall reward a single good deed as if it were ten good deeds." - Hadith Al Bukhari 3207 (islam)

Malik bin Sasaa said that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) described to them his Night Journey saying, "While I wa
lying in Al-Hatim or Al-Hijr, suddenly someone came to me and cut my body open from here t
here." I asked Al-Jarud who was by my side, "What does he mean?" He said, "It means from his throa
to his pubic area," or said, "From the top of the chest." The Prophet (ﷺ) further said, "He then took out m
heart. Then a gold tray of Belief was brought to me and my heart was washed and was filled (wit
Belief) and then returned to its original place. Then a white animal which was smaller than a mule an
bigger than a donkey was brought to me." (On this Al-Jarud asked, "Was it the Buraq, O Ab
Hamza?" I (i.e. Anas) replied in the affirmative). The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The animal's step (was so wid
that it) reached the farthest point within the reach of the animal's sight. I was carried on it, and Gabrie
set out with me till we reached the nearest heaven
When he asked for the gate to be opened, it was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel answered, 'Gabriel.' It wa
asked, 'Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has Muhamma
been called?' Gabriel replied in the affirmative. Then it was said, 'He is welcomed. What an excellen
visit his is!' The gate was opened, and when I went over the first heaven, I saw Adam there. Gabrie
said (to me). 'This is your father, Adam; pay him your greetings.' So I greeted him and he returned th
greeting to me and said, 'You are welcomed, O pious son and pious Prophet.' Then Gabriel ascende
with me till we reached the second heaven. Gabriel asked for the gate to be opened. It was asked
'Who is it?' Gabriel answered, 'Gabriel.' It was asked, 'Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied
'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel answered in the affirmative. Then it wa
said, 'He is welcomed. What an excellent visit his is!' The gate was opened
When I went over the second heaven, there I saw Yahya (i.e. John) and `Isa (i.e. Jesus) who wer
cousins of each other. Gabriel said (to me), 'These are John and Jesus; pay them your greetings.' So
greeted them and both of them returned my greetings to me and said, 'You are welcomed, O piou
brother and pious Prophet.' Then Gabriel ascended with me to the third heaven and asked for its gat
to be opened. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel replied, 'Gabriel.' It was asked, 'Who is accompanyin
you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel replied in th
affirmative. Then it was said, 'He is welcomed, what an excellent visit his is!' The gate was opened
and when I went over the third heaven there I saw Joseph. Gabriel said (to me), 'This is Joseph; pa
him your greetings.' So I greeted him and he returned the greeting to me and said, 'You are welcomed
O pious brother and pious Prophet.' Then Gabriel ascended with me to the fourth heaven and asked fo
its gate to be opened. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel replied, 'Gabriel' It was asked, 'Who i
accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel replie
in the affirmative. Then it was said, 'He is welcomed, what an excel lent visit his is!
The gate was opened, and when I went over the fourth heaven, there I saw Idris. Gabriel said (to me)
'This is Idris; pay him your greetings.' So I greeted him and he returned the greeting to me and said
'You are welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.' Then Gabriel ascended with me to the fift
heaven and asked for its gate to be opened. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel replied, 'Gabriel.' It wa
asked. 'Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has he been called?
Gabriel replied in the affirmative. Then it was said He is welcomed, what an excellent visit his is! S
when I went over the fifth heaven, there I saw Harun (i.e. Aaron), Gabriel said, (to me). This is Aaron
pay him your greetings.' I greeted him and he returned the greeting to me and said, 'You ar
welcomed, O pious brother and pious Prophet.' Then Gabriel ascended with me to the sixth heave
and asked for its gate to be opened. It was asked. 'Who is it?' Gabriel replied, 'Gabriel.' It was asked
'Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It was asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabrie
replied in the affirmative. It was said, 'He is welcomed. What an excellent visit his is!
When I went (over the sixth heaven), there I saw Moses. Gabriel said (to me),' This is Moses; pay hi
your greeting. So I greeted him and he returned the greetings to me and said, 'You are welcomed,
pious brother and pious Prophet.' When I left him (i.e. Moses) he wept. Someone asked him, 'Wha
makes you weep?' Moses said, 'I weep because after me there has been sent (as Prophet) a young ma
whose followers will enter Paradise in greater numbers than my followers.' Then Gabriel ascende
with me to the seventh heaven and asked for its gate to be opened. It was asked, 'Who is it?' Gabrie
replied, 'Gabriel.' It was asked,' Who is accompanying you?' Gabriel replied, 'Muhammad.' It wa
asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel replied in the affirmative. Then it was said, 'He is welcomed
What an excellent visit his is!
So when I went (over the seventh heaven), there I saw Abraham. Gabriel said (to me), 'This is you
father; pay your greetings to him.' So I greeted him and he returned the greetings to me and said, 'Yo
are welcomed, O pious son and pious Prophet.' Then I was made to ascend to Sidrat-ul-Muntaha (i.e
the Lote Tree of the utmost boundary) Behold! Its fruits were like the jars of Hajr (i.e. a place nea
Medina) and its leaves were as big as the ears of elephants. Gabriel said, 'This is the Lote Tree of th
utmost boundary) . Behold ! There ran four rivers, two were hidden and two were visible, I asked
'What are these two kinds of rivers, O Gabriel?' He replied,' As for the hidden rivers, they are tw
rivers in Paradise and the visible rivers are the Nile and the Euphrates.
Then Al-Bait-ul-Ma'mur (i.e. the Sacred House) was shown to me and a container full of wine an
another full of milk and a third full of honey were brought to me. I took the milk. Gabriel remarked
'This is the Islamic religion which you and your followers are following.' Then the prayers wer
enjoined on me: They were fifty prayers a day. When I returned, I passed by Moses who asked (me)
'What have you been ordered to do?' I replied, 'I have been ordered to offer fifty prayers a day.' Mose
said, 'Your followers cannot bear fifty prayers a day, and by Allah, I have tested people before you
and I have tried my level best with Bani Israel (in vain). Go back to your Lord and ask for reduction t
lessen your followers' burden.' So I went back, and Allah reduced ten prayers for me. Then again
came to Moses, but he repeated the same as he had said before. Then again I went back to Allah an
He reduced ten more prayers. When I came back to Moses he said the same, I went back to Allah an
He ordered me to observe ten prayers a day. When I came back to Moses, he repeated the sam
advice, so I went back to Allah and was ordered to observe five prayers a day
When I came back to Moses, he said, 'What have you been ordered?' I replied, 'I have been ordered t
observe five prayers a day.' He said, 'Your followers cannot bear five prayers a day, and no doubt,
have got an experience of the people before you, and I have tried my level best with Bani Israel, so g
back to your Lord and ask for reduction to lessen your follower's burden.' I said, 'I have requested s
much of my Lord that I feel ashamed, but I am satisfied now and surrender to Allah's Order.' When
left, I heard a voice saying, 'I have passed My Order and have lessened the burden of My Worshipers." - Hadith Al Bukhari 3887 (islam)

I was brought al-Buraq Who is an animal white and long, larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule, who would place his hoof a distance equal to the range of version. I mounted it and came to the Temple (Bait Maqdis in Jerusalem), then tethered it to the ring used by the prophets. I entered the mosque and prayed two rak'ahs in it, and then came out and Gabriel brought me a vessel of wine and a vessel of milk. I chose the milk, and Gabriel said: You have chosen the natural thing. Then he took me to heaven. Gabriel then asked the (gate of heaven) to be opened and he was asked who he was. He replied: Gabriel. He was again asked: Who is with you? He (Gabriel) said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? Gabriel replied: He has indeed been sent for. And (the door of the heaven) was opened for us and lo! we saw Adam. He welcomed me and prayed for my good. Then we ascended to the second heaven. Gabriel (peace be upon him) (asked the door of heaven to be opened), and he was asked who he was. He answered: Gabriel; and was again asked: Who is with you? He replied: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He replied: He has indeed been sent for. The gate was opened. When I entered 'Isa b. Maryam and Yahya b. Zakariya (peace be upon both of them), cousins from the maternal side. welcomed me and prayed for my good Then I was taken to the third heaven and Gabriel asked for the opening (of the door). He was asked: Who are you? He replied: Gabriel. He was (again) asked: Who is with you? He replied Muhammad (ﷺ). It was said: Has he been sent for? He replied He has indeed been sent for. (The gate) was opened for us and I saw Yusuf (peace of Allah be upon him) who had been given half of (world) beauty. He welcomed me prayed for my well-being. Then he ascended with us to the fourth heaven. Gabriel (peace be upon him) asked for the (gate) to be opened, and it was said: Who is he? He replied: Gabriel. It was (again) said: Who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He replied: He has indeed been sent for. The (gate) was opened for us, and lo! Idris was there. He welcomed me and prayed for my well-being (About him) Allah, the Exalted and the Glorious, has said:" We elevated him (Idris) to the exalted position" (Qur'an xix. 57). Then he ascended with us to the fifth heaven and Gabriel asked for the (gate) to be opened. It was said: Who is he? He replied Gabriel. It was (again) said: Who is with thee? He replied: Muhammad. It was said Has he been sent for? He replied: He has indeed been sent for. (The gate) was opened for us and then I was with Harun (Aaron-peace of Allah be upon him). He welcomed me prayed for my well-being. Then I was taken to the sixth heaven. Gabriel (peace be upon him) asked for the door to be opened. It was said: Who is he? He replied: Gabriel. It was said: Who is with thee? He replied: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He replied: He has indeed been sent for. (The gate) was opened for us and there I was with Musa (Moses peace be upon him) He welcomed me and prayed for my well-being. Then I was taken up to the seventh heaven. Gabriel asked the (gate) to be opened. It was said: Who is he? He said: Gabriel It was said. Who is with thee? He replied: Muhammad (may peace be upon him.) It was said: Has he been sent for? He replied: He has indeed been sent for. (The gate) was opened for us and there I found Ibrahim (Abraham peace be upon him) reclining against the Bait-ul-Ma'mur and there enter into it seventy thousand angels every day, never to visit (this place) again. Then I was taken to Sidrat-ul-Muntaha whose leaves were like elephant ears and its fruit like big earthenware vessels. And when it was covered by the Command of Allah, it underwent such a change that none amongst the creation has the power to praise its beauty
Then Allah revealed to me a revelation and He made obligatory for me fifty prayers every day and night. Then I went down to Moses (peace be upon him) and he said: What has your Lord enjoined upon your Ummah? I said: Fifty prayers. He said: Return to thy Lord and beg for reduction (in the number of prayers), for your community shallnot be able to bear this burden. as I have put to test the children of Isra'il and tried them (and found them too weak to bear such a heavy burden). He (the Holy Prophet) said: I went back to my Lord and said: My Lord, make things lighter for my Ummah. (The Lord) reduced five prayers for me. I went down to Moses and said. (The Lord) reduced five (prayers) for me, He said: Verily thy Ummah shall not be able to bear this burden; return to thy Lord and ask Him to make things lighter. I then kept going back and forth between my Lord Blessed and Exalted and Moses, till He said: There are five prayers every day and night. O Muhammad, each being credited as ten, so that makes fifty prayers. He who intends to do a good deed and does not do it will have a good deed recorded for him; and if he does it, it will be recorded for him as ten; whereas he who intends to do an evil deed and does not do, it will not be recorded for him; and if he does it, only one evil deed will be recorded. I then came down and when I came to Moses and informed him, he said: Go back to thy Lord and ask Him to make things lighter. Upon this the Messenger of Allah remarked: I returned to my Lord until I felt ashamed before Him. - Hadith Muslim 162a (islam)

Paradise will eat? Why does a child attract the similarity to his father or to his mother?" The Prophet (ﷺ)
replied, "Gabriel has just now informed me of that." Ibn Salam said, "He (i.e. Gabriel) is the enemy of
the Jews amongst the angels. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "As for the first sign of The Hour, it will be a fire that
will collect the people from the East to the West. As for the first meal which the people of Paradise
will eat, it will be the caudate (extra) lobe of the fish-liver. As for the child, if the man's discharge
proceeds the woman's discharge, the child attracts the similarity to the man, and if the woman's
discharge proceeds the man's, then the child attracts the similarity to the woman."
On this, `Abdullah bin Salam said, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped except Allah,
and that you are the Messenger of Allah." and added, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Jews invent such lies as make
one astonished, so please ask them about me before they know about my conversion to I slam . " The
Jews came, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "What kind of man is `Abdullah bin Salam among you?" They
replied, "The best of us and the son of the best of us and the most superior among us, and the son of
the most superior among us. "The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "What would you think if `Abdullah bin Salam should
embrace Islam?" They said, "May Allah protect him from that." The Prophet (ﷺ) repeated his question and
they gave the same answer. Then `Abdullah came out to them and said, "I testify that None has the
right to be worshipped except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah!" On this, the Jews
said, "He is the most wicked among us and the son of the most wicked among us." So they degraded
him. On this, he (i.e. `Abdullah bin Salam) said, "It is this that I was afraid of, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). - Hadith Al Bukhari 3938 (islam)

nobody knows unless he be a prophet. Firstly, what is the first portent of the Hour? What is the first
meal of the people of Paradise? And what makes a baby look like its father or mother?'. The Prophet (ﷺ)
said, "Just now Gabriel has informed me about that." `Abdullah said, "Gabriel?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
"Yes." `Abdullah said, "He, among the angels is the enemy of the Jews." On that the Prophet (ﷺ) recited
this Holy Verse:--
"Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel (let him die in his fury!) for he has brought it (i.e. Qur'an) down to
your heart by Allah's permission." (2.97) Then he added, "As for the first portent of the Hour, it will
be a fire that will collect the people from the East to West. And as for the first meal of the people of
Paradise, it will be the caudite (i.e. extra) lobe of the fish liver. And if a man's discharge proceeded
that of the woman, then the child resembles the father, and if the woman's discharge proceeded that of

has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah, O, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ); the
Jews are liars, and if they should come to know that I have embraced Islam, they would accuse me of
being a liar." In the meantime some Jews came (to the Prophet) and he asked them, "What is
`Abdullah's status amongst you?" They replied, "He is the best amongst us, and he is our chief and the
son of our chief." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "What would you think if `Abdullah bin Salam embraced Islam?"
They replied, "May Allah protect him from this!" Then `Abdullah came out and said, "I testify that
None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The Jews
then said, "Abdullah is the worst of us and the son of the worst of us," and disparaged him. On that
`Abdullah said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! This is what I was afraid of!" - Hadith Al Bukhari 4480 (islam)

She brought out for me, a bag containing one Sa of barley, and we had a domestic she animal (i.e. a
kid) which I slaughtered then, and my wife ground the barley and she finished at the time I finished
my job (i.e. slaughtering the kid). Then I cut the meat into pieces and put it in an earthenware
(cooking) pot, and returned to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . My wife said, "Do not disgrace me in front of Allah's
Apostle and those who are with him." So I went to him and said to him secretly, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I
have slaughtered a she-animal (i.e. kid) of ours, and we have ground a Sa of barley which was with us.
So please come, you and another person along with you." The Prophet (ﷺ) raised his voice and said, "O
people of Trench ! Jabir has prepared a meal so let us go." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to me, "Don't put
down your earthenware meat pot (from the fireplace) or bake your dough till I come." So I came (to
my house) and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) too, came, proceeding before the people. When I came to my wife, she
said, "May Allah do so-and-so to you." I said, "I have told the Prophet (ﷺ) of what you said." Then she
brought out to him (i.e. the Prophet (ﷺ) the dough, and he spat in it and invoked for Allah's Blessings in it.
Then he proceeded towards our earthenware meat-pot and spat in it and invoked for Allah's Blessings
in it. Then he said (to my wife). Call a lady-baker to bake along with you and keep on taking out
scoops from your earthenware meat-pot, and do not put it down from its fireplace." They were onethousand
(who took their meals), and by Allah they all ate, and when they left the food and went
away, our earthenware pot was still bubbling (full of meat) as if it had not decreased, and our dough
was still being baked as if nothing had been taken from it. - Hadith Al Bukhari 4102 (islam)

The wives of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) were in two groups. One group consisted of `Aisha, Hafsa, Safiyya and
Sauda; and the other group consisted of Um Salama and the other wives of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). The
Muslims knew that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) loved `Aisha, so if any of them had a gift and wished to give to
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), he would delay it, till Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had come to `Aisha's home and then he would
send his gift to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in her home. The group of Um Salama discussed the matter together
and decided that Um Salama should request Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to tell the people to send their gifts to him
in whatever wife's house he was. Um Salama told Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) of what they had said, but he did not
reply.
Then they (those wives) asked Um Salama about it. She said, "He did not say anything to me." They
asked her to talk to him again. She talked to him again when she met him on her day, but he gave no
reply. When they asked her, she replied that he had given no reply. They said to her, "Talk to him till
he gives you a reply." When it was her turn, she talked to him again. He then said to her, "Do not hurt
me regarding Aisha, as the Divine Inspirations do not come to me on any of the beds except that of
Aisha." On that Um Salama said, "I repent to Allah for hurting you." Then the group of Um Salama
called Fatima, the daughter of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and sent her to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to say to him, "Your
wives request to treat them and the daughter of Abu Bakr on equal terms."
Then Fatima conveyed the message to him. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O my daughter! Don't you love whom
I love?" She replied in the affirmative and returned and told them of the situation. They requested her
to go to him again but she refused. They then sent Zainab bint Jahsh who went to him and used harsh
words saying, "Your wives request you to treat them and the daughter of Ibn Abu Quhafa on equal
terms." On that she raised her voice and abused `Aisha to her face so much so that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)
looked at `Aisha to see whether she would retort. `Aisha started replying to Zainab till she silenced
her. The Prophet (ﷺ) then looked at `Aisha and said, "She is really the daughter of Abu Bakr." - Hadith Al Bukhari 2581 (islam)
